Why do I feel lonely even though I’m constantly connected to people online?

Feeling lonely while always being online is incredibly common. A big factor in this is that most online interactions don’t fully meet our needs for connection. Liking posts, sending quick messages, or scrolling through updates can create a sense of connection or contact, but not always a sense of closeness. Deeper connection usually involves vulnerability, shared experiences, and feeling seen.
Another factor is comparison. We are regularly exposed to highlight reels of other people’s lives. We are seeing the best parts of their lives posted online. This can make you feel like you’re missing out or that their life is “better” than yours’ Over time, this can increase feelings of isolation rather than reduce them.
In addition, being constantly online can sometimes replace opportunities for in person connections. Not say online connections are all bad, people form incredibly fulfilling relationships and connections all the time, but the more intentional you are with your interactions and connections the less lonely you will feel.
