All writing abilities encouraged

Writing may not be a skill you’re confident with right now — and that’s okay. This workshop is led by an award-winning writer and editor who will help you strengthen your writing and boost your confidence. All you need is a passion for writing.

For young adults with lived experience

Writing is a powerful tool for healing. This class is designed for young people (age 18-29) going through certain life stages and living with a mental health condition, a substance use disorder, or who have experienced trauma. This is the first time we're offering this class, and we hope to expand to more age groups in the future.

It’s virtual

Join this workshop from anywhere in the world. The entire nine weeks are completely virtual.

Share your story

Your story can inspire other people. The workshop will end with a friends and family event where you’ll present your work. You’ll also have the chance to be featured on the IDONTMIND Journal and Mental Health Connecticut’s Telling Tales Podcast.

Space is limited

This class is limited to 25 people to make it as personal as possible. Please make sure that you’re available to attend every class before you apply.

The healing power of writing

Writing is a powerful way to understand yourself, other people, and the world around you. And it’s one of the most accessible tools we have for managing our mental health. It can empower you, build your confidence, and give you a new way of managing your emotions. It gives you the power to tell your story the way you want it to be told.

About Write On!

The IDONTMIND Writing Workshop is presented by Write On!, a writing and advocacy program through Mental Health Connecticut. According to the University of Hartford’s Center for Social Research, Write On! is an effective intervention in mental health that “targets self-stigmatizing beliefs to potentially break the chain of negative events.” Write On! was created and is facilitated by Janet Reynolds, lifelong writer, editor, publisher, educator, journaler, and mom to a son who lives with schizophrenia. Janet believes in the power of words to transform, and that sharing our stories is a way to help our mental health and end stigma.

I didn’t consider myself a writer by any means before the class. It was challenging, and it was also really wonderful to build a community with other people taking the course. It was just this really beautiful experience.
— Lauren Be Dear (Write On! Alum)
