How can you support someone who is grieving?

Grief is like the ocean — it’s expansive, and rogue waves and whirlpools can come out of nowhere. Supporting someone who is grieving can feel challenging, but the most impactful thing you can do is be there for them. Whether you do so in-person, virtually, or through phone calls or text messages, be present and stand with them in their grief. Let them know you’re there to listen but do not pressure them to share with you. Allow them to share, be silent, or cry. Align yourself with whatever they need at that moment. When folx are in newfound grief, practical help might be most helpful. Consider ways to help with daily tasks like setting up a meal train, running errands, or helping with childcare.

Grief is both personal and spiritual. Grief is not something we move on from or get over. Grief is something that we move through and move with, forever leaving its mark on our life’s tapestry. The depth of grief does not leave us, but the time it takes to recover from the impact of loss lessens over time. Grief becomes a lifelong companion who teaches us about love, compassion, connection, and resilience.
