How can I identify the root causes of my anxiety?

Anxiety is often a symptom of a need we have that is not being met. It is important to explore what roots our anxiety is connected to. This information can create space for healing and a more aligned way to help cope with your anxious symptoms so they do not stop you from living your life!

  • Identify Patterns: Notice how your anxiety manifests by identifying when your anxiety hits hardest. Is it before big social events, during certain times of the day, in specific environments, or around certain people? Patterns can reveal what’s triggering your anxious feelings.

  • Explore Thoughts: Anxiety often comes from thoughts and beliefs that feel automatic but are rooted in negative or fear-based core beliefs. When you feel anxious, ask yourself, “What am I telling myself right now?” Try journaling these thoughts—you might discover beliefs that need gentle challenging.

  • Reflect on Past Experiences: Sometimes, our experiences, like childhood events, trauma, or specific challenges, can leave lasting impressions. These impressions may contribute to anxiety today. Working with a therapist can help uncover and process these influences safely.

  • Focus on Self-Care: Recognizing root causes can take time, so grounding yourself with daily self-care helps. Get enough sleep, move your body, and keep a supportive social circle. Feeling cared for can make exploring deeper causes feel less overwhelming.

  • Trust the Process: You’re not in a race against anyone, so don’t pressure yourself to adhere to a timeline. The process of self-discovery takes as long as it takes, and that is OKAY.
